William Leon Higgins


William Leon Higgins, age 90, of Mt. Vernon, Ind., passed away May 5, 2026, at Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville, Ind. He was born May 2, 1936 in Mt. Vernon, Ind., to the late Lawrence Higgins and Evelyn (Broadhead) Lewis.

Bill proudly served in the United States National Guard and was a graduate of Mt. Vernon High School. He dedicated many years of hard work as an operator at CountryMark Refinery, retiring in 1998.

A longtime member of Trinity Evangelical Church, Bill was actively involved in many areas of church life, always willing to lend a helping hand. He was also a member of the Eagles 1717, the Mt. Vernon M-Club, and the American Legion Post 5.

Bill and his wife, Glenda, shared a deep love for dancing and cherished the many memories made with their close-knit group of more than 20 friends who regularly spent weekends together. Dancing at locations like the Eagles in Mt. Vernon and even traveling to Carmi on Sundays. Bill and Glenda remained the last of that group.

He was a standout athlete in high school, excelling in multiple sports. His love for athletics never faded, as he remained a dedicated supporter of Mt. Vernon teams, faithfully attending both home and away sporting events throughout the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Jack and Bob Higgins.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Glenda (Kuhn) Higgins; son, Mark William Higgins (Debbe); daughters, Brenda Peter (Steve), Anita Zenthoefer (Pete), Patty Neighbors (Jim), Donna Clevenger (John) and Denise Upshaw (Allen); eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Larry Higgins (Linda); and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at Trinity Evangelical Church, 505 Mulberry Street, Mt. Vernon, Ind., with Pastor Jim Allen officiating and burial to follow in Bellefontaine Cemetery. Military Rites to be performed by American Legion Owen Dunn Post 5 Honor Guard.

Visitation was held from 4 until 7 p.m., on Friday, May 8, 2026 at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main Street, Mt. Vernon, Ind., and from 10 until 11 a.m., service time at the church on Saturday.
