Mary L. Rexing, 98, of Evansville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Oasis Dementia Care.
Mary was born on December 31, 1927, in Posey County, Indiana, to the late William and Anna (Folz) Hartmann.
Mary attended St. Matthews Catholic School in Mount Vernon, Indiana.
Mary was very proud of her first official employment with the then SIGECO. She reminisced often about her experience and the lasting friends she made working there. In 1949, Mary married Herman G. Rexing and together they raised five children. Mary was a very good homemaker, cook, and baker. In addition, Mary enjoyed playing Bridge, Clabber, and golfing in the Hamilton and Helfrich Women’s Leagues. Mary also joined the Indiana Porcelain China Painters and became an accomplished china painter.
Surviving Mary are her children, Mary Jane (Richard) Montgomery, Kathy (Theodore) Niemeier, Julie (Lou) McCool, and John Rexing; a son-in-law, Geoffrey Sandefur; fifteen grandchildren; and nineteen great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Herman Rexing in 2016; infant daughters, Catherine and Elizabeth Rexing; daughter, Evelyn (Effinger) Sandefur; daughter in law, Joyce Paddock Rexing; and siblings, Rita Hasenour, Dorothy Kissel, Pauline Denning, William (Bill) Hartmann, Jr., Don Hartmann, and Robert (Bob) Hartmann.
Mary’s family would like to thank the caring staff at Oasis Dementia Care and Gentiva Hospice for their loving care and devotion.
There was a Mass of Christian Burial held at noon on Monday, April 6, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Christopher Droste officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Friends visited with the family from 10 a.m. until service time on Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2701 W. Franklin Street in Evansville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Boniface Parish, for the benefit of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
