Herman E. Roach Jr., 77, of Mt. Vernon, Ind., peacefully passed into the arms of the Lord surrounded by his family on June 4, 2026, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital. He was born on December 5, 1948 in Evansville, Ind., to the late Herman and Nadine (Russell) Roach.
Herman was a 1967 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and continued his education by studying seminary at Campbellsville University. Guided by a deep faith, Herman was ordained in 1974 and he served as an interim minister for many years, officiating countless weddings and several funerals throughout the community. He cherished reading and studying the Bible. In addition to his ministry, Herman was a professional baseball and softball umpire. He dedicated more than 30 years of service to the Metropolitan School District of Mount Vernon as a bus driver and head custodian, retiring in 2010. Herman enjoyed watching baseball and wrestling, and he was especially a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Herman was a devoted friend, neighbor, and community member who touched the lives of many.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Toni; his mother, Nadine (Russell) Roach; father, Herman Roach Sr.; step-mother, Marie (Walker) Roach; and sisters, Susie Roach and Melba Jane (Roach) King.
He is survived by his sons, Kevin Roach, and Ryan Roach (Amanda); nieces, Christi Jones and Melanie Foerster; his mother’s family, the Russells; and his step family, the Walkers.
A Memorial Service will be held at 12 noon on Friday, June 19, 2026 at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main Street, Mt. Vernon, Ind., with Rev. Bob White and Pastor Mark Tabor officiating.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m., until 12 p.m., service time on Friday at the funeral home.
