Esther E. Saltzman

Esther E. Saltzman, 91, of Mt. Vernon, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Heritage Center.

Esther was born on November 26, 1934, in Mt. Vernon, Ind., to the late William and Christene (Renschler) Ubelhack. She was a 1951 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School and a 1952 graduate of Devries Beauty School. She was a licensed beautician and cosmetologist for over 60 years and the owner and operator of Silhouette Beauty Salon. Esther lived her entire life in her homeplace and was a 78-year member of Trinity Evangelical Church in Mt. Vernon. She was confirmed in 1948 at Trinity and taught Sunday School there for 11 years.

In memory of her deceased family members, she had murals painted at the church, one of Jesus and children and another of Noah’s Arc. She loved God and was a woman of great faith who read her Bible daily. Esther enjoyed traveling, working in her flower garden, birds, wildlife, antiques and helping others.

Surviving Esther are many nieces and nephews, Michael Niehaus, Bryan (Judi) Oeth, Terry (Diane) Mahrenholz, Brad (Christy) Oeth, Marcia Tyson, and Carole Mahrenholz, as well as many great nieces and great nephews.

In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Paul Saltzman in 1998 and by sisters and their husbands, Irene and Bob Oeth, Dorothy “Dottie” and Earl Niehaus, and Lorene and Max Mahrenholz.

Funeral services for Esther were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Trinity Evangelical Church, with the Rev. Jim Allen officiating. Burial followed in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Friends visited with the family from 3 until 6 p.m., on Thursday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street and from 10 a.m. until service time on Friday at Trinity Evangelical Church, 505 Mulberry Street, Mt. Vernon, IN 47620.

Esther’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Heritage Hospice and all of her caregivers for their kind and compassionate care.
