Douglas Wayne King, age 76, of Chandler, Ind., passed away August 14, 2026 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital. He was born in Evansville, Ind., to the late Wallace and Leota (Bell) King.
Douglas was a United States Navy Veteran. He graduated in 1968 from Mount Vernon High School. He continued his education at Vincennes University receiving a degree in horticulture and attended Purdue University. Retiring in 2012, Douglas worked for the Evansville State Hospital for 31 years as a horticulturist. He was a member of the Newburgh American Legion, Post 44. Douglas was also the first president of the Southwestern Indiana Master Gardener Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Noel and Gary King.
Douglas is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Pat (Gibbons) King; sons, Timothy and Charles King; brother, Larry King (Miriam); sisters-in-law, Freddie King, Cathie Miller (Michael); brother-in-law, Alan Schelhorn; grandchildren, Kristie Miller (Danny) and Celeste King; great-grandson, Leo Miller; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Memorial Service was held at 6 p.m., on Friday, August 21, 2026 at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main St., Mt. Vernon, IN 47620 with Pastor Emily Slade to officiate.
Visitation was held from 4 until 6 p.m., service time on Friday at the funeral home.
