Vikings take down SK Spartans in season opener 11-1

The North Posey baseball team began their spring season on the road last Tuesday night in Vincennes against the South Knox Spartans. Coming into this season, there were a lot of positions to fill due to last year’s senior class.

In this matchup, those issues did not phase the Vikings whatsoever by defeating the Spartans by the final score of 11-1 in a game that was called after the fifth inning. Many new faces stepped up and proved they could fill the vacant spots from last season’s team.

North Posey wasted no time getting runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Lane Young singled to right field. Jacob Embrey was hit by a pitch. Brennon Reich singled to left field scoring Young to give Vikings a 1-0 advantage. Embrey was caught stealing third base. Parker Magill was hit by a pitch. Then Ben Freeman hits a triple to right field, scoring Reich and Magill to give North Posey a 3-0 lead.

The Vikings rallied in the top of the fourth inning, scoring seven runs starting with a Will Bippus single. Joey Hisch hit a double scoring Bippus to make the score 4-0. Lane Young doubled. Jacob Embrey hit a double to left field that scored Hisch and Young to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead. Brennon Reich hit a single moving Embrey to third base.

Parker Magill doubled to right field scoring the pinch runner Hunter McManus to give North Posey a 7-0 advantage. Ben Freeman walked, Ben Buchanan singled to right field scoring Reich to make the score 8-0. Hisch stepped to the plate for the second time in the fourth inning hitting a single that helped score Freeman and Magill to extend the Viking lead out to 10-0.

South Knox scored one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 10-1. In the top of the fifth inning, Jacob Embrey smacked a homer on a fly ball to right field to give North Posey an 11-1 advantage, which went one to be the final score after five innings.

As a team, the Vikings had 14 hits in the game. Brennon Reich went three for four hitting with two runs, one RBI, and two stolen bases. Jacob Embrey went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, three RBIs, one run, and once hit by a pitch. Joey Hisch went two for three with a double, three RBIs, and a run scored.

Parker Magill went two for three hitting with a double, two runs, one RBI, and once hit by a pitch. Lane Young was two for four with a double and two runs scored. Ben Freeman hit a triple, drove in two runs, scored a run, walked, and was hit by a pitch.

Will Bippus had one hit, one run, and one stolen base. Bippus got the win on the pitcher’s mound throwing all five innings, allowing four hits, one run, no walks with three strikeouts on 70 pitches thrown. Ben Buchanan had one hit and drove in one run. Davin Sullivan had one hit and stole a base. Hunter McManus scored one run.

The North Posey Viking baseball team played their home opener last Thursday afternoon against the Evansville Reitz Panthers. This contest did not fare so well for the Vikings losing by a lop-sided score of 10-1. Reitz snapped back after losing their season opener to Gibson Southern 15-0. For the season, North Posey’s record fell to 1-1, while Reitz improved to 1-1.

North Posey was held to three hits in the game as a team. Getting three hits for North Posey were Lane Young, Brennon Reich, and Remington Johnson. On the pitcher’s mound, Johnson took the loss going three innings, giving up nine hits, five runs, no walks with two strikeouts.
