Beloved wife and mother Mary Jane (Shockley) LaFave went to her eternal home on September 21, 2026, after a fierce battle with cancer. Mary was born on September 10, 1952, in Uniontown, Ky., to Marion and Olivia (Mosley) Shockley.

Mary graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1970. She continued her educational journey by receiving her Vocational Training Certificate in 1981. She worked for approximately 20 years at the local Mount Vernon Dollar General before finally retiring.

In 1997, she married the love of her life, William LaFave. Together they created a quiet, fulfilling life with family, friends, and their treasured fur babies. (Buddy, Molly, And Pee Wee). Mary had many hobbies, including word searches, reading, gardening, and crafting. Her love for butterflies could be seen throughout their home; a beautiful reflection of the gentle spirit she carried with her.

“Love is patient, Love is Kind…” (1 Corinthians 13). Mary was the embodiment of this verse. She was a true example of love with her quiet voice but passionate heart. She will be deeply missed by all who have known her.

Mary was preceded in death by her loving parents, Marion and Olivia Shockley. Two brothers, Jesse “Dave” Shockley of Weston, Fla., and Charles Shockley of Mount Vernon, Ind., and a sister, Martha Shockley of Mount Vernon, Ind.

She is survived by her husband, William LaFave. Her brothers and sisters-in-law: Douglas (Glenis) Shockley, Oldsmar, Fla., and Larry (Donna) Shockley, Cincinnati, Ohio. Children Anna Moll of Evansville, Ind.; Shawn (Kristina) Nobles of Evansville, Ind.; Brian (Angie) Nobles of Mount Vernon, Ind. Stepdaughter Elizabeth Ann (Jeremy) Smith of Macedonia, Ill. Grandchildren Ben Munsell, Samantha (Kyle) Britton, Robert (Ella) Smith, Kaitlyne (Logan) Goldman, Elizabeth Nobles, Danielle Fals, and three great-grandchildren: Jacobi Fals, Everett Fals, and Raelynn Britton. Plus, numerous nieces and nephews.

As per Mary’s final wishes, there will be no services.

Memorial donations can be made to NEWLIFE Rescue and Adoption, 6500 Leonard Road North, Mt. Vernon, IN 47620, in honor of her love for animals.

The family would also like to thank Charles Ford Hospice for their kindness and compassion during Mary’s final weeks.
