Gene Dockery was born in Madisonville, Ky., on August 23, 1932. He was called home to Heaven on February 26, 2026 to be reunited with his wife Barbara of 67 years.
He was a loving, devoted father to his daughters, Janice (Tom) Kopatich and Jennifer Adair. He was a proud grandfather to his grandchildren, Kyle (Bailee) Kopatich, Kendra (Jacob) Steinhart, Mackenzie Adair, and Jordan Adair. He also loved his great-grandchildren, Tatum, Tucker, Tilly, Kinsley, and Jett. He leaves behind brothers-in-law, Terrell Miller and Lee Flowers; his sister, Faith Trout; and many nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his father and mother, Glover and Gladiola Dockery; his brother, Glenn; his sister, Linda Miller; brothers-in-law, JT Littlepage and Wes Trout; his sister-in-law, Margie Sanders; and his son-in-law, Tony Adair.
He was a graduate of Millersburg High School, where he was on the basketball team. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served from 1951-1955, during the Korean Conflict. Afterward, he was employed by the Whirlpool Corporation and retired after 40 years of service. He also served as Chandler Town Board President, Chandler Baseball and Softball Coach, and Chandler Baseball Umpire. Gene was an avid horseracing enthusiast and loved making people laugh. His favorite place was Daytona Beach, Fla.
Gene was a lifelong Christian and served at Millersburg U.M.C. as a U.M.Y.F. Leader, Sunday school teacher, choir member, and lay witness minister. He touched countless lives with his unwavering faith. In his own words, “Don’t weep for me, I am on my way to Heaven. Are you?”
Friends and family may visit on Friday, March 6, from 4-7 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, March 7, at 11 a.m. with entombment to immediately follow at Noon at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 1800 Saint George Road, Evansville, Ind.
