Daniel Lee Hinderliter, age 87, of Norris City, Ill., and Mt. Vernon, Ind., passed peacefully on August 3, 2026. He was born February 4, 1939 in Posey County to the late, William and Erma (Ludlow) Hinderliter.
Dan was a 1957 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School. He graduated from Indiana State University with a degree in Biology. Dan attended mortuary school after college. Then went on to find several different career paths including but not limited to being a surveyor, an undertaker in Mount Vernon and Indianapolis, an underground coal miner in Southern Illinois, and retired as a farmer. Dan was an active member at the Norris City IL First United Methodist. He enjoyed being an active member of the Posey County Democratic Party. Along with spending his time camping and fishing with his close friends the VanHaaften’s, Simpson’s, Jackson’s, Adam’s and Thomas’s; Dan enjoyed membership in several fraternal organizations including being a 60-year Freemason, a member of the Hadi Shrine and a National Guard Veteran member of the Owen Dunn Post 5.
His greatest enjoyment later in life was visiting with his grandchildren and spending time with them on the Farm. He looked forward to their annual family summer road trips, caravanning across the American west and southern states. He especially enjoyed the many trips to Edisto Beach, S. C., with his cousin Janet. All four of his grandchildren can attest to the amazing grandpa Dan was with their consistent weekend trips from Mt. Vernon to the farm.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John “Jack” Hinderliter.
Dan is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dianne (Norvell); daughters, Holly Watzlavik (Paul) and Kristin “Charlie” Williams (Lonnie); six grandchildren, Joe Abell, Dan Watzlavik (Caeli), Elizabeth and Sarah Watzlavik, Bradley and Kyle Williams; three great-grandchildren; brother, Paul Hinderliter; brother-in-law, Jack Norvell (Denise); and nieces and nephews.
