Vikings gain week split decision with win over Pike Central

The game that got away. That is exactly what happened last Wednesday night to the North Posey boys’ basketball team. Sure, on any given night, anyone can beat anyone. However, this game against the Evansville Day School Eagles got away from the Vikings.
North Posey traveled to the east side of Evansville to take on the Day School Eagles. A game many thought the Vikings should have won. The Vikings controlled the game from the tip-off all the way until midway through the third quarter when Day School went on a 15-0 run. From that point, Day School led the remainder of the game to win 50-45.
At the beginning of the first quarter, North Posey jumped out to a 6-0 advantage. Day School refused to go away with the end of the first quarter finishing with North Posey leading 11-8.
The Vikings started off the second quarter leading by as many as ten points at 20-10. Day School gained some momentum off the three three-point baskets by Jackson Harris to get within two at 23-21 going into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, North Posey took over, building a nine-point lead at 32-23. At that point, the Vikings looked like they were in control and about to close out this game with a win. Not so fast, that is when Day School went on a 15-0 run to end the third quarter leading 38-32 over the Vikings.
North Posey tied the game three times in the fourth quarter and never led this matchup again. Shots were not falling and turnovers were piling up on the Vikings. Day School ended the game, winning by five points.
On the season, Evansville Day School improved their season record to six wins and eight losses. North Posey’s season record dropped to three wins and twelve losses. When North Posey scores over 50 points in a game. The Vikings are 3-0. Every time the Vikings have scored under 50 points in a game. They are 0-12.
Trey Buecher led the Vikings by scoring 12 points. This was the second straight game Buecher has led the Vikings in scoring. Brayden Compton finished with 11 points and freshman Cody Crane scored nine points. For Day School, Jackson Harris scored a game-high 24 points. Malik Zaidan scored 11 points for the Eagles.

The Viking boys’ basketball team was back at home last Thursday night in a conference matchup against the Pike Central Chargers. This was a game that looked like it would help get North Posey back on the right track. One bad quarter nearly caused the Vikings to lose this game. However, the Vikings played a good second half to win by the final score of 50-46.
North Posey started off the game by making three three-point baskets in the first quarter. After one quarter of the game played, North Posey led 14-9. The second quarter was a disaster for the Vikings. Pike Central outscored North Posey 15-5 in the second period to gain the lead at the halftime break by the score of 24-19.
In the third quarter, North Posey trailed in this period by as many as seven points. The Vikings gradually snuck back in the game and even led at the end of the third quarter by the score of 33-30. North Posey won the third period 14-6.
During the fourth quarter, it was a battle between the two schools. Neither school would back down with both fighting until the end. North Posey never lost the lead in the fourth quarter and moved on to win by the final score of 50-46.
Going back to the numbers on the season. When North Posey scores 50 or more points in a game. They are undefeated at 4-0. If the Vikings score under 50 points in a game. Their seasonal record is 0-12.
Leading the Vikings in scoring was Brayden Compton scoring 17 points. Compton scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half. Tyler Arnold finished with 12 points for North Posey. All of Arnold’s points came from the second half. Trey Buecher finished with eight points. Nate Davis led Pike Central by scoring a game-high 27 points.
