American Home To Be Featured Next Week - The third week in March has been designated by the American Home Department of the General Federation Women’s Club to arrange and have programs on the different phases of the American home. Mount Vernon, with Mrs. O. C. Klein, as chairman, will give to the public a program next Thursday, March 18, at 2:30 at the M. E. Church
Generally speaking the American home, so dear to every woman, is the soul of our country. In it the family should have perfect freedom to live together and individually. It should be a place where harmony of color and surroundings make it a beautiful place in which to live. Hygiene, sanitation, health, and pre-natal care play an important part. Home economics teaching takes care of well balanced meals and deals with appliances which make the housewife’s labors light. Budgeting makes the home safe, for it includes a savings account, and life and fire insurance. Religion and education plays such an important role and are so necessary to make a home the greatest Institution in America.
Demonstrations Will End Van Camp Week - Van Camp Week, which has been observed here all this week, will be brought to a close this Friday and Saturday with demonstrations in the Lowenhaupt building, 225 Main Street, by representatives of the company. All products manufactured by this company will be included in the demonstration and everybody is cordially invited to call. As an added feature of the observance here, radio programs are being broadcasted from station 9CJZ, operated by Wilfred Pearson at the furniture store of J. W. Pearson and Son. There will be short talks by Mayor Miller, President Weilbrenner, and Manager E.E. Bailey of the Van Camp Packing Company. There will also be a male quartet of the Senior High School, a vocal solo by Mrs. Frank Fessenden and an instrumental trio composed of Mrs. H. Kling, piano, Miss Brenda McElhaney, cellist, and Mr. Henry Kling, violin.
Griffin School Building Is Dedicated - Rising majestically from the ruins of the school building destroyed by the tornado of almost a year ago, the handsome new $38,000. The school building in Griffin, a monument to resourcefulness of a stricken community, was dedicated with appropriate ceremonies last Thursday before a crowd which included practically all of the town’s inhabitants as well as notated educators of the state, district, and county. The new Griffin school is modern in every particular, the building being of brick construction, two stories high with a basement.
County Asked To Help In State Road Survey - Note: (The Beginning Of Highway 62) - Mr. A. V. Burch (Evansville), of the State Highway Commission, and a number of members of the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce appeared before the County Commissioners at the Courthouse asking for financial assistance in the survey of the proposed hard-surfaced road between this city and Evansville. A hard-surfaced road, as proposed, would cost the state $300,000 and the only cost to Posey County will be wages for labor to assist the state engineer in surveying for the most feasible route. At present, the gravel road, known as the Middle Mount Vernon-Evansville Road, seems to be most favored, but a complete survey might change this. The use of this road would lessen the distance to Evansville by one and one-fourth miles.
