Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet received a $25,000 grant from Valero Renewables- Mount Vernon that will be spent on purchasing new athletic style shoes for Posey County students in need.
Amy Smith and Brandon Cole, HFELF-Posey County Co-Chairs gave a speech on March 12, to Valero employees and took part in a question-and-answer session that explained the mission and finer details of the Happy Feet program.
“It’s always amazing to tell people about the Happy Feet program,” said Cole. “This is a program that began with taking a step in faith and trusting God to move through this community in a mighty way. I remember writing a story in The Posey County News and then receiving a call from Smith. We really work well together, and God just really orchestrated the resources and people that have fueled this program.”
Smith recalled reading the story in the newspaper, and said, “This is a project that needs funding.” A genuine smile appeared on the face of Smith as she reminisced about memorable moments and friendships made while volunteering in Happy Feet. “I am involved in many community events and groups, but Happy Feet is my favorite.” There is just something about helping students-in-need, feel confident as they walk into school, in your own community.
Happy Feet was able to include every public school in Posey County last year. This takes strong coordination, generous Posey County residents, and great schools. Valero will play a major role in assuring that the 2026 Shoe Week will be well funded and a great success.
Happy Feet will host their annual Shoe week at the Posey County public schools during the second week of September. Shoe Sensations will have their mobile shoe store traveling throughout Posey County as both the students and volunteers will receive quite the blessing.
Happy Feet is a 501 C3 organization that depends on grants and donations to help provide shoes to students in need. Happy Feet has a goal of removing a stumbling block that prevents some students from doing their best in school. This program is intended to build self-esteem in Posey County students and decrease bullying.
