Frank Smith, 73, of Poseyville, passed away peacefully at his home on October 24, 2025. He was born in Kokomo, Ind., on September 8, 1952, the son of Wilbur and Patty (Perryman) Smith.

Frank was a proud graduate of Frankfort Senior High School, where he excelled on the swim team, earning several trophies and setting records. His athletic achievements earned him a swimming scholarship to Indiana State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree.

Following college, Frank joined the United States Marine Corps - a chapter of his life he was especially proud of and loved to share stories about. After completing recruit training in San Diego, he was stationed with the 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan. Upon returning stateside, he attended the USMC Officer Candidate School and went on to serve as a Platoon Commander with the 1st Marine Division. By the end of his service, Frank had earned the rank of Captain.

In 1981, Frank began his career with the Indiana State Police, where he dedicated 30 years of service before retiring as a Master Trooper in 2011, at which time he became the first School Resource Officer for the North Posey School District. During his time on the force, Frank served in a variety of roles, including detective, bomb squad, and member of the drug task force. He also participated in numerous trainings and certifications throughout his career. Known for his leadership and kindness, Frank often took new officers under his wing to make sure they felt welcomed and supported. He was an active member of the Posey County FOP Lodge and a strong supporter of the Women’s FOP Auxiliary.

One of Frank’s greatest joys was working with students. He served as a substitute teacher for more than 30 years - beginning in his hometown of Frankfort and later in the Mount Vernon and North Posey school systems. Frank often referred to the students he taught as “his kids.” He had a genuine heart for young people, always striving to be a positive role model and ensuring their safety and success.

Frank is survived by his goddaughter, Courtney (Jay) Price; his brothers and sisters in law enforcement; close friends; and several nieces and nephews. He will also be deeply missed by countless members of “his kids” from the North Posey schools and the community he loved so much.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Debbie Carpenter; and brother, Mike Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, November 3, 2025, at Denning Family Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, with the Indiana State Police Chaplain Father Daniel Coffey officiating. Burial will follow at Immanuel UCC Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until the service time at the funeral home.

Per Frank’s request, a Remembrance Party will follow at the Owen Dunn American Legion Post 5, beginning at 5 p.m. Friends are encouraged to come share stories and celebrate Frank’s life and legacy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North Posey High School Frank Smith Memorial Fund or The Posey County Kids Incorporated.
