Caroline ‘Dale’ Kennedy

Caroline “Dale” Kennedy (née Field), 88, of New Harmony, Ind., died peacefully in her sleep on October 23, 2026, at the Charles Ford Memorial Home, where she had resided since 2016.
Born in Manhattan, New York, on April 21, 1938, Dale’s unconventional upbringing included four mothers: a birth mother, an adoptive mother, and two stepmothers. She developed into a fiercely independent woman with an irrepressible sense of humor and style.
A Northwestern University graduate and longtime Delta Delta Delta sorority member, Dale taught kindergarten and first grade in Arizona for more than 35 years. Her elaborately decorated classrooms reflected her lifelong creativity. Following retirement, she volunteered at the Tucson Museum of Art.
Dale moved to New Harmony in 2007, purchasing a cottage on South Street. After major back surgery, she moved to the Charles Ford Memorial Home in 2016, where her artistic pursuits flourished.
She studied watercolor painting in Scotland and oil painting with Douglas David at the Hoosier Salon, where she was an active member and volunteer. Her paintings and photographs appeared at the Mason-Nordgauer Gallery, Hoosier Salon, and Lowry Hollow. She won numerous blue ribbons at the Posey County Fair, created hundreds of original greeting cards, and was a member of the Friends of the Working Men’s Institute.
An accomplished bridge player and crossword enthusiast, Dale had an extraordinary memory for names, dates, and stories. An entertaining storyteller with strong opinions and a sharp, sometimes salty wit, she loved tennis, scuba diving, road trips, and dancing—from the jitterbug to online salsa lessons during COVID.
Her extraordinary collection of hats, jewelry, and high heels rivaled that of a fashion icon. Her hair and makeup were always immaculate, her wit sharp, and her vocabulary occasionally salty. A delightful combination of Auntie Mame and Iris Apfel, Dale was herself a colorful work of art.
She became a local celebrity when the Charles Ford Memorial Home featured her on billboards around Mt. Vernon and Wadesville. There she was, larger than life—a description that suited her perfectly.
Dale is survived by her sisters, Docey Lewis of New Harmony and Hope McLeod of Washburn, Wis.; nephew Owen Lewis, his wife Anne-Claire Limon-Lewis, and their son Quentin, of New Harmony; nieces Oriana Noel Cozzolino (Andy) of Olympia, Wash., and Yazmin Bowers (Tom Undine) of Minneapolis and Washburn; and her cherished Hollars family of Colorado and Arizona.
A Gathering of Friends and Family will be held November 4, 2026, from 10 a.m. to noon at Werry Funeral Home in New Harmony. A Celebration of Life is planned for April 21, 2027, Dale’s 89th birthday, from 3–5 p.m. at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church in New Harmony. Private family interment will take place that morning at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Dale’s family extends heartfelt thanks to the exceptional staff of the Charles Ford Memorial Home for their unfailing kindness, compassion, and loving care throughout her years in residence and her final days.
Dale made the world a brighter place.
